On January the 5th 2013 in Kansas City Shayna Baszler will go to war facing Alexis Davis. This will be the second meeting of these two female titans. Baszler came away with the win the first time they fought
by decision. I spoke with Shayna last Sunday night in an interview on WV Fight Sports Radio to talk about the upcoming fight. Shayna said that the training camp for this fight was going great and that finishing the fight is the only option this second time around. She said that she wanted to leave no question, Davis will know that she cannot defeat her. Baszler who has been very active as of late fighting in the last two Invicta’s, is very happy there. However, said she would take a fight with Ronda Rousey if the offer came from the UFC. She states that she is ready to make her mark no matter the opponent, they are all just bodies to her. Baszler holds an impressive record of 15-7 and even more impressive, 14 of those wins are by submission including a very one over Keiko Tamai with a twister. What was most interesting to myself was her training style. Shayna a self proclaimed catch wrestler is so much more. Training under Former UFC legend Josh Barnett, she incorporates a lot of different styles to make the complete MMA fighter. Utelizing Eric Paulson's philosophy that the body is a submission waiting to happen, for her instead of always looking for traditional submissions she goes by concepts, like here is a arm what way should it not bend and that’s the way she takes it. A basic concept, it doesn’t have to
have a name it just isn’t a normal bend for that joint so its is a submission if it causes the opponent to have pain or surrender. Her abilitity to see unconventional ways that the average fighter would overlook, this makes her so much better as a submission master. She also uses a self-defence concept while fighting not other than typical MMA strikes like punching and elbowing unconvential parts of the body such as the hamstrings as seen in her first fight against Alexis Davis. The philosophy being that if submissions are not there that strike are,and if strikes are not there submissions are. She
said she is lucky to have coaches that think outside the box. Shayna also states that Invicta has more finishes, due to the fact that all the top girls in the world train with guys who are bigger and stronger
than them so these women have great technique because of this. Females are still fighting win and not fighting not to lose. They can take chances to win and not worry about being cut from the
organization. So with this being said make your plans now to tune into Invicta FC 4 to watch this absolute war cause, you won’t be disappointed.

Questions

1 Now David this Sat Dec 1st you are going to be fighting Bo Preece for
the Spartan Fighting Championships featherweight championship tell us
about it?

Fighting Bo for Spartan's featherweight is an honor. They are a class
A promotion and arguably the best around. I knew when they was looking
for me an opponent that it would be someone very tough and thats
exactly what they done by finding me a fight with Preece. I appreciate
everything they have done for me.

2 how has your training camp been going for this fight and have you
done anything different for this fight?

I have had a excellent camp and weight training for this fight. I
train with dudes that love to train, push each other, and get better
every day. I have worked extra with J.P Felty for this fight. I
understand Bo has a wrestling back ground so It was a must to make
sure mine was up to par. I have also sparred a lot more with a lot of
new people and other gyms.

3 Now Bo is undefeated but he has never been out of the first round
do you feel this will be an advantage to you?

There has to be an advantage there mentally. After the adrenaline dump
you have to push your self and I have been there. I went 3 rounds with
a 170 fighter and I really had to want it. Bo is 4-0 and I have also
won my last 4 fights.

4 Tell us a little about what got you into MMA?

I was so active in school playing any sport I could and carried over
into college where I played football. Things didn't work out the way I
expected so when I returned home I had a buddy who was actually
training people out of his basement. I used it as a escape at first to
free myself from all my worries and stress. Than I began to love to
train and compete. Before I knew it I was training everyday and here I
am today, without Ricky Borders I wouldn't be where I am today. We
packed up and got with Integrity Fitness 2 years ago and now we have
an amazing group of guys and a great facility with a 24 ft octagon

5 This fight is already be built up as fight of the night does that
put any extra pressure on you to live up to the hype?

This fight has had so much publicity not only because we are 2 of the
top in our class but in my opinion in one of the more exciting
classes. I have been main event once and had the opportunity to fight
for three titles so this isn't my first rodeo when the pressure is on.
I am just going to go out and perform as if it was just me and him at
the gym.

6 Now I don't want you to tell us your game plan but do you have a
specific game plan for Bo or are you just going out and seeing what he
is going to do and react off of that?

I don't really have a game plan. I have some strategies and things I
want to do. I have worked hard on my boxing and wrestling for this
fight and cross trained with some very talented fighters.

7 Not looking past Bo but pending a win here whats next for you and
how long before you start thinking of turning pro?

If I beat Bo I plan on defending the title, they say your not a true
champion until you do so. I'm mot rushing going pro every day I am in
the gym I am learning and soaking it all in. When my coaches and I
decide to make the jump to pro that's when everyone will know lol
until then I am just staying dedicated, determined, and humble.

Message to Bo

I'm not one to talk smack or down any fighter. Anyone who has the
balls to step in the cage has my respect

Thanks

I want to thank all my sponsors gotti fight gear, prostike mma,

I Want to Be Like?
by Gina Begley
Edited and revised by Jessamyn Duke and Mable Duke

With my very first experience of cutting weight under my belt, I stood standing in line to weigh in for my first ever kickboxing match. I still had no idea if I would even have an opponent for this particular Muay Thai tournament, which made my state of dehydration less than desirable to say the least. Trying to take my mind off my discomfort, I stood staring at an old newspaper clipping framed on the wall. The article was about a female kick boxer and it listed some of her accomplishments. I read the article with little enthusiasm and can't even recall the specifics of what was written now because I was so preoccupied with wanting to inhale the small jug of strawberry pedialyte I was holding while anxiously waiting for my turn on the scale. My coach, Scott Elliott noticed me looking at the article and came over to ask how I felt. Once assured that I was as fine (as fine as anyone can be after drastically limiting their intake of food and drink for what felt to me by this time like an eternity) he went on to tell me that he had met the woman in the article and that she was a great kick boxer and interesting person. He said if after this fight I found that I loved this sport and wanted to continue, I should take time to find out more about her.
Well, I did in fact decide that I love the sport and I did take time to find out who the article was talking about. The woman was Kathy Long. In her 19 professional kickboxing matches she had experienced only one loss. She's held five world titles and has earned black belts in several styles of martial arts. She's also an accomplished stunt woman and actress. Not only has she had a successful career as an active martial artist, she now owns her own successful school. On top of all of her other accomplishments she's also been awarded several prestigious Hall of Fame recognitions, including the Black Belt Magazines Full Contact Fighter of the Year in 1992 which included candidates both male and female.
Long is a prime example of a woman with a successful career as a martial artist, particularly since she was making her mark in the sport long before it seemed reasonable or popular. It's important in any sport to choose your role models wisely and my coaches have taken the time to follow the sport and point me in the direction of women such as Kathy Long. History teaches us what works and what doesn't, so looking up to and emulating the right people can be invaluable to your own career. Kathy Long has enjoyed a long and successful career and has been an inspiration to women around the world. I feel very fortunate to have discovered her so early in my own martial arts journey.
Long, and has not only continued her training, she has even expanded her martial arts resume to include MMA. Although her first experience in the sport came as a commentator for UFC 1, it wasn't until 2009 that she fought her first professional bout in MMA. Her opponent was Avery Vilche and Long took claimed the victory by unanimous decision. Most athletes in combat sports are ready to call it quits by the time they've reach their late 30’s. Now at the age of 48, Long still feels that desire to put it all on the line and compete. With the rising popularity of females fighting in MMA, several major promotions have started signing females to their ranks and some even exclusively feature female athletes. Hopefully one of these promotions will take notice of Kathy Long's warrior spirit, notable achievements, and continued desire to fight and give her the opportunity to showcase the accumulation of her skills of her remarkable martial arts career.
